Diamond hunting is a great family activity in Herkimer County.
Herkimer County is known for
|
|
producing
extremely clear quartz crystals, shipped all over as Herkimer
diamonds. World famous "Herkimer diamonds" are beautifully
doubly terminated quartz crystals already faceted by nature. The
Enchanted Forest/Water Safari is New York's largest water theme
park with numerous water rides, petting zoo, circus shows and
more.
Nearby attractions include Remington Arms Gun Museum, Salisbury
Covered Bridge, Erie Canal Locks 17 and 18 and Hinckley
Reservoir. Within an hour are Turning Stone Casino, Cooperstown
Baseball Hall of Fame, Boxing Hall of Fame, FX Matt Brewery,
Fort Stanwix, Erie Canal Village, Adirondack Scenic Railroad, NY
State Fairgrounds, Vernon Downs and more. Historic attractions
include the General Herkimer State Historic Site, the Erie
Canal, Indian Castle Church, Historic Four Corners, Linus Yale
Home, Fort Klock, Johnston Hall and more.
Agriculture forms the
leading pursuit. The hilly character of the surface particularly
adapts this county to pasturage; and dairying has long been the
leading branch of industry. Hops are largely produced. At Little
Falls, and a few other localities, considerable manufacturing
takes place.
Herkimer
County Community College, located in Herkimer, provides a wide range
of learning options. Mary Ann Carroll, instructor of radio-TV at
Herkimer County Community College, has been named to Who's Who Among
American Teachers. Teachers are selected for this honor because they
"made a difference" in the life of a former student. |
